Sky TV Packages - the details

If you aren’t too sure about some of the terms listed in the packages above, then take a quick look below. We’ve taken the most popular topics and answered the most widely asked questions on them.

If you want to go into a topic in more detail then have a look at the navigation bar above. You’ll see a choice of more in-depth pages relating to some of Sky's fantastic products and services.

Show

Sky TV Channels

We know that its quality that counts, but the sheer number of channels accessible through Sky is still pretty impressive. News channels? Check. Sports channels? You bet. Film Channels? Uh-huh. Entertainment channels? Abso-flipping-lutely.

In fact, with more than 700 different channels, Sky TV offers the highest number of stations of all UK providers. But, like we said, quantity isn’t everything – so just consider the fact that, with Sky TV, you’ll get the best of everything – from National Geographic to Sky Sports HD.

Show

Sky TV Channel Highlights

The thing people love most about Sky TV is the sheer volume of different things to watch. No-where is this more obvious than their fantastic, in-depth, always up-to-date sports coverage.

On four dedicated sports channels, you’ll be able to watch football highlights from the British lower and the major European leagues, Formula 1, PGA Tour golf, and of course live Premier League matches throughout the season. There’s also ample coverage of wrestling, cricket and, via ESPN, NBA basketball.

Sky Atlantic, meanwhile, exclusively brings you the best TV shows from across the pond: new shows like Big Love (about a Mormon polygamist family, starring Chloe Sevigny) as well as repeats of classics like The Sopranos and The X Files.

You’ll also find everything you could possibly wish for in terms of movies, documentaries, music, reality TV and drama. It really is endless.

Show

Sky TV Multiroom

Does your household have more than one television set? Do your viewing habits clash with the people you live with? If the answer to either is yes, you could do a lot worse than considering Sky Multiroom.

This subscription feature lets you and your cohabitants watch Sky TV simultaneously in more than one room. It signifies the end of all those tedious remote control rows. You’ll need to sign up and get an additional Sky box for every room you want to equip with Sky TV, though. So bear in mind that this is not a cheap option.

If you’re new to the whole multiroom thing, you’ll get a free Sky HD Multiroom box which will let you enjoy Sky content in high definition in a room of your choice – as long as it’s got a TV and a Sky+HD box.

Show

Sky 3D TV

Sky 3D is the first dedicated 3D TV channel in Europe. It launched last year and is available to all new and existing Sky customers. It is only available through Sky.

With 3D TV, you can now experience entertainment in a much more rich and engaging way. It puts you at the centre of the action rather than just outside of it. Think about it: would you rather sit next to James Bond during one of his ridiculous car/speedboat/helicopter chases, or watch him do it from the other side of the road? Exactly.

To make use of this option, you will need a few things: a 3D-compatible TV set, a set of 3D glasses, a Sky+HD box, and Sky World with the HD Pack. Existing Sky customers who own a 3D TV can simply activate the Sky 3D channel or, if need be, upgrade their Sky TV package to Sky World HD.

Show

Sky HD Pack

Sky is offering customers the chance to upgrade their Sky TV package with the HD Pack. It will transform your viewing experience of sports, films and documentaries into a gorgeous, colourful joy of a pastime.

You’ll find over 50 HD channels, the largest choice of any provider.

Once you start there’s no going back. Put simply, High Definition is to television what tomato ketchup is to fried food: it makes everything that bit more awesome.

It used to be that HD was a concern only for film fans obsessed with visual quality. Today, with new advances in technology, more and more TV content is made with HD in mind. It’s rapidly expanding across our TV channels, for the simple reason that it looks so much sharper. After all, it has about five times the resolution of standard definition television.

Show

Sky + HD box

If you’re new to Sky, you’re in luck: a free and shiny, brand new Sky+HD box is waiting for customers signing up to the Sky+HD online package.

If you’ve already got Sky but want HD – which is completely understandable because it rules – you can simply upgrade your existing deal. If you’re not too fussed about HD or want to try out Sky TV before thinking about any upgrades, you can opt for the Sky+ box.

With that option you won’t have any HD capabilities but you’ll be able to pause and rewind live TV as you watch it (great for when you’ve missed a punchline or plot twist because the phone rang), record TV shows when you’re out of the house, and use your smartphone or laptop as a remote control. However all new customers currently receive a free SKY+HD box when they sign up.

Show

Sky Go

Ever been on a train ride that didn’t seem to end? Of course you have. Luckily, if you’re a Sky customer, you don’t ever need to go anywhere without having dozens of films at your immediate disposal.

With Sky Go, customers who have Sky Movies 1 and 2 included in their Sky TV package can watch content from all 11 dedicated film channels on their mobile devices (e.g. tablet, smartphone or laptop).

Stuck on the bus on transfer deadline day? Just tune into Sky Sports News on your smartphone and stay on top of rumours and developments regarding your favourite club. Your train is delayed? While away the time with a Hollywood blockbuster.

Sign-up is easy-peasy, and you can register up to two mobile devices. All you’d need now is a mobile popcorn machine.

Show

Sky Installation

You’ve decided you want all the goodies that Sky TV can throw at you? Excellent stuff. To install your Sky TV, you’ll need to book either a morning or afternoon timeslot with Sky. This is so a professional engineer can come and take care of all the tricky business involving satellite dishes and stuff.

This should not take longer than an hour, after which your Sky TV viewing card will be activated and you’ll be given a little introduction to the wonders of your new Sky TV package. After that, you’re good to go – kick back, relax and enjoy the smorgasbord of entertainment right at your fingertips.

Show

Sky Movies Pack

Like films? You’ll love Sky Movies. It has everything a serious film buff would want from a new TV package: brand new films (shown on Sky Movies Premiere, which gets to broadcast new films a year before anyone else), older masterpieces (Sky Movies Classics), and nine more film channels dedicated to different genres such as comedy, action, drama, horror and indie films. Do you have kids? They’ll love Disney Cinemagic, which shows beautiful animations such as Bambi and The Lion King.

If you already have Sky but no movies pack, don’t fret – you can add it to your existing Sky TV package for only £16 a month.

Show

Sky Entertainment

Entertainment is serious business. We’ll let that sink in for a bit. But once you think about how precious your leisure time is to you, you’ll agree that wasting it by watching sub-par television is not the way forward.

One way to implement some kind of quality control is to opt for the Sky Entertainment package, which contains superb American drama and comedy series on Sky Atlantic and Sky 1. There’s also in-depth arts programmes and documentaries on Sky Arts 1, and classical music, opera and dance performances on Sky Arts 2.

Elsewhere, there’s the sidesplittingly hilarious Comedy Central channel, which shows those Friends marathons that are like milk and honey for the soul, as well as banter and hardware geekery over on Dave.

Show

Sky Entertainment Xtra

Are you not entertained yet? Well alright then, how about going for the Sky Entertainment Extra option? This includes all of the great channels mentioned above, plus 52 additional ones to expand your entertainment options into (almost) infinity. You’ll have access to things like MTV Rocks and Disney XD, among many others.

Show

Sky Box Office

Don’t fancy paying a monthly fee for watching certain TV content? Sky Box Office is a neat little pay-per-view service where you press the Box Office button on your remote control, punch in a pin number and choose your piece of entertainment to watch there and then. Your card will then be charged a one-off price.

If you’ve got Sky+ or Sky+HD, you can save your film for seven days and watch it at any point during that period – a bit like a DVD rental without the hassle. What’s so great about Sky Box Office is that you get access to films that have only come out very recently – so if you miss out on a blockbuster you really wanted to see, you can catch up with Sky Box Office.

Elementary

The next instalment of the Sherlock Holmes saga will air on Sky Living this October.

It’s hard to imagine Cumberbatch’s Sherlock being upstaged by any US adaptation, but then again we thought a modern update of Doyle’s detective series wouldn’t pass muster. Purism’s fine but we’d advise an open mind when it comes to Holmes.

Elementary sees Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) torn from Baker Street, London after a stint in rehab and repatriated to the Big Apple, where he sets up home with a female Dr Watson (Lucy Liu). There’s plenty of tales about Englishmen in New York, but when that man is the great deductive detective himself this will be far from obvious viewing.

A brave take on the cult detective to be sure, and we’re certain diehard fans will be spitting with rage but an alternative take on the Holmes/Watson relationship should make for an interesting watch this autumn.

The Editor's
Hidden Gems

hidden-gems-strike-back-vengence-sky-one

This action packed drama has now returned to Sky One HD for a ten part instalment of kicking ass and taking names every Sunday.

Strike Back has more in common with 80s action thrillers than anything else that you’ll find on television at the moment. If you find yourself needing to take a break between Call of Duty sessions – than this is the next best thing to fill your time.

The new series begins with the kidnapping of a British diplomat by Somalian Warlord Huseyin Waabri. It’s only a matter of time before Section 20 operative Damian Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) is dispatched to Mogadishu to make all right with the world.

For a satisfying hour’s television Strike Back has the lot, gratuitous violence courtesy of the Cinemax production partnership and sexual scenes of which there’s a surprising amount of considering the war torn setting.
