Fawlty Towers on UK Gold

Oh, do stop messing around Basil!

Everything that Basil Fawlty seems to touch goes wrong. Good intentions collide with a quick temper and an ability to lose the plot to create some of the most memorable comedy ever to escape from Torquay. By the time that John Cleese and Connie Booth sat down to work on Fawlty Towers, Cleese was already world famous for his role in the Monty Python sketch series – but Fawlty Towers was to seal his reputation for generations to come.

. Infamously the show was based upon a seethingly rude hotel proprietor that Cleese encountered whilst he was filming for the Monty Python. Quick without meaning to, Donald Sinclair helped Cleese create one of the country’s most cringe worthy comic characters.

Famous plot lines include attempting to conceal a dead rat, impersonating a NAZI and trying to remove a dead person from his premises. Decades before The Office arrived, Cleese had the country cringing into their sofas and feeling empathy for the hapless Spanish waiter, Manuel.

Fawlty Towers was voted number one in the BFI’s 100 Greatest Television Programmes in 2000.

Select Digital Fawlty Towers Quote: Basil Fawlty referring to Manuel, the waiter

Basil “You'll have to forgive him. He's from Barcelona.”
